John Lawrence

Most of musical life has been spent playing saxophone and clarinet in dance and jazz bands, big and small. I was mainly influenced by great players like Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman (clarinets) Johnny Hodges and Coleman Hawkins (saxophones), and later players like Paul Desmond and Stan Getz, also by bands like Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

These people played what I called swinging & inventive melodic jazz as opposed to the machinelike multi not production line jazz of today.

I enjoy playing with CLASSIC BREEZE (mostly on clarinet & sometimes a solo piece on sax). The music is varied & interesting to play, the musicians are a very warm & friendly bunch, which also includes the Guv David. This makes it all worthwhile.

I have played the clarinet regularly since the age of 10, although for many years I was only playing once a week in a small amateur orchestra in south- west London. I listened to Michael Collins Live and collected the recordings of Thea King and Emma Johnson.

In recent years, having more time, I also enjoyed playing chamber music and joined a clarinet choir, where I played E flat soprano clarinet and tried jazz for the first time.

On moving to Torquay in 2007, I joined Classic Breeze, my first experience of a Concert Band, which I have found thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating.

I have a great passion for music, I would like people to listen to all types of Music. My aim is to bring music to as many people as possible and keep music live. One of the excitements of live performance is without a doubt its unpredictable, however well prepared you are, the unexpected can happen and often does. The Band rehearse new (sight reads) music every week. The Band benefit enormously from this and improve the Band Member playing. I find music making very satisfying, It does not matter whom you are or where you come from, everybody can enjoy all types of music. We are a very happy run Band and we enjoy each others company and making music together.

About Ipplepen
spacer

Ipplepen is located within Teignbridge local authority area. Historically it formed part of Black Torrington Hundred. It falls within Ipplepen Deanery for ecclesiastical purposes. The Deaneries are used to arrange the typescript Church Notes of B.F.Cresswell which are held in the Westcountry Studies Library.
A parish history file is held in Ipplepen Library.

St. Andrew church stands well at the head of the village, and is almost entirely a 15th century rebuilding. The Perpendicular windows of the nave are notably good. The font and rood-screen are said to be c. 1430- 50. The pulpit is a magnificent specimen of 15th century art, with canopied niches from which the statuettes have disappeared. There are also two par- close screens.

Ipplepen was founded c. 1100 a dependent cell of the Augustinian abbey of St. Pierre at Fougeres in Brittany. Remains of Ipplepen priory are said to be incorporated in a house now known as The Priory. Ambrook is first recorded in 1238, and was a medieval franklin's "mansion," of which traces survive in the present house of Great Ambrook.
